Description

Though many of the artists involved have set of residence outside of their native Italy, all contribute here to make a captivating portrait of a shared spirit and cultural memory. The album opens with "Errori," deceptively fragile sonic ornaments crafted and suspended in space by Blackest Ever Black artist Silvia Kastel. This is followed closely by the mellifluous, warming glow of percussionist Andrea Belfi's "Spitting & Skytouching," and then by the resolute electric bass patterns and luminous fog of "Lux et Sonus," from Eeri label head Marco Shuttle. Hospital Productions alumnus Ninos du Brasil open the B-side with a similarly dense, amorphous construction built from tribalistic chants and rhythmic patterns, to be followed by Mannequin label boss Alessandro Adriani's "You Will Not Be There For The End," showcasing his distinctive take on the 'paranoiac breakdance' aesthetic of classic EBM. S.A. veteran Chevel rounds out the first record in the program by interlacing several percolating synth lines together into a richly conversational piece.

This kind of music cannot be objectively judged, nor should it be. Like all good music, it should be experienced subjectively, with open ears and mind. The only artist represented here with whom I was already familiar is Caterina Barbieri, who has released quite a few albums of her works. Here 2022 album "Spirit Exit" is especially interesting. The following are my impressions of this collection:Track 1: An interesting mix of minimalism with odd textures, all of which somehow works.Track 2: Ambient bits and bobs that feel good—a little like AMSR, or auditory-tactile synesthesia.Track 3: "Lux et sonus" is well named. Determined movements through a bright soundscape.Track 4: Percussive jungle mood with insistent calls to join in, or at least move your body.Track 5: A little too '80s retro for me. Old synth and drum machine sounds.Track 6: Sparse ambient sounds with a slowly emerging conversational theme that draws me in.Track 7: Steady-on jungle and noodling melodies.Track 8: Reminiscent of some early-'80s synth and game music. Not my cuppa...Track 9: Perhaps the most interesting of the lot. From a minimalist who is never too minimal.Track 10: A gentle and welcome visitation from an increasingly animated friend.Give it a listen and have fun.
