This is a stunning book. Beautiful photographs (by Hillel Berger) of intricate glass flowers made in the late 1800’s in Germany by Leopold and Rudolph Blaschka on behalf of the Botanical Gardens and Museum of Harvard. They were shipped in pieces from Germany to New York and assembled for exhibit. The narrative in this beautiful book is the botanical information about each displayed plant, including its proper Latin name, it’s habitst and other interesting facts. This is a lovely book for artists, botanists and people who appreciate art.I have visited the glass flower exhibit at Harvard twice and these exquisite reproductions never cease to amaze. They are as well-produced as is possible for human hands and most cannot at first be told from the real thing. In fact I had to convince myself that they were really glass! The book "The Glass Flowers at Harvard" by Richard Schultes and William Davis and produced by the Botanical Museum of Harvard University gives the reader some idea of these remarkable models. The photography of Hillel Burger was certainly difficult as each model had to be removed and photographed in a special way to avoid breakage and to produce the best likeness. In this the photographer succeeded remarkably well. The models themselves were produced not by an unknown and unreproducible method, but by an extremely tedious and exacting methodology that few people would take the time to duplicate. The Blascha's glass techniques, developed in Dresden, Germany, could only be done by people of enormous patience and talent. The models are a treasure and one of the most worthwhile collections to see in Boston. I recommend the book highly, but better still see the glass flowers in person!A fascinating collection at the Harvard Natural History Museum. It celebrates the artistry of the father and son team of artists who created a huge collection of hyper accurate and detailed glass plants, flowers and seeds for botany students in the late 1800s to early 1900s!Flower Beauty Preserved in Delicate Glass by generations of German glass blowers. Simply a rare treasure of a stunning art skill and intricacy of reproducing and preserving a wide range of worldwide botanical specimens. If you can ever visit the glass flowers at Harvard's Botanical Museum, take the time. If you can't get there, buy this book and enjoy the history of this amazing achievement that began back in the latter part of the 19th century. So interesting to read about the history of these glass flowers and the creativity, knowledge and discipline that went into their creation. The next best thing to being at Harvard viewing this exquisite collection. The Glass Flowers are unbelievable, and highly recommended to all!Wonderful book. The book is as described, like new except for slight page discoloration due to age. Really appreciated the back story of the glass flowers and how the collection came to be. The photos are lovely, but the flowers are so realistic that you can't tell they're glass! Very satisfied. This took a really long time to arrive, but it is lovely. Belles photos.Typographie élégante.Un ouvrage à garder et à offrir.Pour les botanistes et les esthètes.
